How we make it easy for you
Not sure where to start with micro-philanthropy? Take a deep breath and think about what you love most about life on Earth. We’ve made it simple to see how the planet supports your passions. Just pick an element and start giving back.
Yes! All of your Gen E philanthropy is fully tax-deductible. You’ll receive donation tax receipts via email, and they’re also stored in your app. In addition, we’ll provide you with an annual year-end statement, compiling all the info you need for tax preparations.
We operate on monthly cycles, and we’ll charge your Funding Source on the 5th of the month for the previous month’s donation total. This gives time for the month’s pledges to post and for you to make any changes, as you can always edit or waive pledges during the current period.
Note: on your credit card statement, the vendor descriptor for your donation will read ‘Gen E-CAF America’. CAF America is our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt partner, which helps us make grants to your designated nonprofit beneficiaries.
The app is free to download and use. For making donations, we do retain an 8% fee on the monthly aggregate donation amount in order to cover some costs for our philanthropy platform service. Our payment platform partner, Stripe, automatically deducts 2.2% + $.30 per donation transaction. You get full credit for your total donation, then fees are deducted in transit, and net grants are made to nonprofit beneficiaries, all for the most efficient process. Read our Terms of Use here.
It’s easy and only takes a few minutes to become a philanthropist for the planet. Here’s how:
1. Download the Gen E: Earth Philanthropy app, available in the App Store and Google Play
2. Create an account and set up your Environmental Portfolio by choosing how much and where to give
3. Add your Funding Source, aka payment method, to pay for donations. We partner with Stripe for payment processing.
4. Link a Purchase Tracker account where your purchases will trigger micro-philanthropy pledges. We partner with industry-leader Plaid for this feature.

We curate a well-thought-out, manageable selection of high impact environmental orgs that you can feel good about supporting. Our list represents a spectrum of solutions and impact areas spanning from local to global scale. We want everyone to find their personal environmental areas to support, easily.
Our vetting methodology leverages existing evaluation tools where we look for top-tier ratings. We review studies, scientific research, and publicly available information, such as 990’s and information from a nonprofit’s website. We also factor in qualitative research from our own observations in the field, plus conversations with the nonprofits themselves.

If you haven’t made any pledges during the month, then you won’t be charged. Otherwise, donations can be $1 and up.
However, if your monthly pledge total is between $0.01 and $0.99, we’ll have to round you up to $1.00 flat in order to cover the transaction cost and send some change back to the planet.

Every purchase you make on your linked Purchase Tracker will automatically trigger a donation pledge for your portfolio of environmental nonprofits. Gen E keeps track of all your activity throughout the month, and on the 5th of the next month, your Funding Source will be charged with your tax-deductible donation.
When we charge your Funding Source, your donation first goes to CAF America, our 501(c)(3) grantmaking partner, who helps us quickly and efficiently issue grants to the designated nonprofits for the cumulative amount from the Gen E Community. All this happens automatically behind the scenes, so you can pick up a positive habit for our planet without even thinking about it.
Your Gen E app is your dashboard to track your philanthropy over time. You can make changes to your portfolio, edit pledges, update account info, and find all your philanthropy receipts and statements organized in one place.
You can learn about all the nonprofits in their profile pages. If you’re feeling extra, you can make Spot Impacts like plant trees, or add a Boost to your monthly philanthropy.
You can make one-off Spot Donations to any nonprofit any time.
